21 August 2017 - Week 20

One of the major events of this week was a trip to Brasov.  Our friend's, The Winders, from Shelley, Idaho live in Brasov.  We went there to pick up some tires they brought from Bucharest.

Last week we learned that the country of Romania has a law requiring winter tires from 1 November until 1 March.  The fines for not having the tires can range from $350 to $625.  We called the mission office and learned that they had winter tires for our car, so all we had to do was figure out how to get them.  It's a 9-hour drive one way to Bucharest.  We didn't want to make the drive. So we asked Winders to pick up the tires and bring them as far as Brasov so we could get them there.  The morning of Wednesday, August 16, we got up and hit the road, returning home at 9 that evening.   The Winders are headed back to Idaho in a couple of weeks, so we were grateful to be able to visit with them once more as they are finishing their mission. We enjoyed the visit and they made us a great lunch. We really appreciated their help getting our tires. I intended to grab a picture of the tire loading, but this is all I have to show.

We saw some fun things along the road to Brasov.  There were a couple of spots along the road where they are selling tourist things.  They look a lot like this, except for the finger in the picture.

The road that winds through the mountains had several little stands where people were selling cheeses and produce.

The very next day we were on the road again for Zone Conference in Oradea.  I totally dropped the ball on that and don't have any photos.  The Soras in Oradea made us a great lunch of Navajo Fry bread with beans, rice, lettuce, tomatoes and such.  Very yummy.

President and Sora Hettinger are such great teachers.  Sora Hettinger started us off with teaching about how Laman and Lemuel were a toxic influence on their families. She taught that how you deal with toxins is through love.

President Hettinger taught us that goal setting is so important in being successful.  He told a story about his son who ran for an elected office in Arizona.  He was elected because he did everything they could think of that would help him reach the goal. In the end they had no REGRETS.  It is important for us to stretch ourselves and believe that God will intervene to bring the right things to pass.

We see this cute little three wheel truck on our way to the church all the time, so I decided to stop on our way home from our walk in the forest.  Kinda cute.    And there were two trees in bloom I had to get pictures of the flowers.  I don't know their names.

We walked by these bicycles with potted flowers while we were doing some errands in "Centru" the middle of the city.

We spend a lot of time studying the Romanian language.  We have a tutor who helps us and we work with the Sisters some days.  It is coming slowly.  Our tutor challenged us to read the Book of Mormon or "Cartea Lui Mormon" in Romanian by the end of our mission.  We are working on that.  He says no other Senior couple has accomplished that in this mission.   Hmmm. I don't know if he is right. Anyway, we are working on it.
