13 November 2017 - Week 32

This week we:   actually baked something in our Romanian oven, had a meeting with two men from the Europe area  who taught us about the Self Reliance program,  were excited to see our Grandaughter, Klarissa fly to her mission assignment, FaceTime with some of our kids, bought a sewing machine, walked in the forest, and attended District Conference in Oradea at the Ramada Hotel.

I have not used the oven in our apartment at all, mostly because the summer was hot and I did not want to heat up the apartment.  The symbols on the oven are a bit difficult, but I found a users guide online to help me.  We used our old bananas and baked some banana bread.  It was a bit dark on the top, but ok.  I missed using Brent's Grandma Jensen's recipe though.  I did not bring it with me.

Tuesday was a very foggy day, with lots of dew on the ground.  We went to the forest for a walk.  This picture is a panorama across a farmers field.

On Thursday our Self Reliance visitors arrived at lunchtime.  We went to "Euphoria" again.  It has a nice atmosphere for talking and the food is good.  Their names were Matt Mathias from the US who is assigned to the Budapest, Hungary office and Tom King from Australia who lives in London.  They drove 2 1/2 hours to arrive here.  They were interested to learn about how the work is going in Arad. Their main assignment in encouraging teaching of the self-reliance program.  The principles of budgeting and self improvement along with reliance on the Lord and keeping his commandments are applicable to everyone.

After borrowing a sewing machine to hem the baptism pants Elder Gore had for the baptism, I realized how much I missed having a sewing machine to repair our clothes, so we parted with $125 and bought a nice little Singer machine.  It will work fine for what we need here.

Our Granddaughter, Klarissa, flew to the New Hampshire Manchester mission.  She was assigned to serve with Sister Anderson, making it a Andersen Anderson companionship.  We are so pleased that she is willing give her time and talents to the Lord!  Go Klassy Go!

Sunday was a treat.  We drove to Oradea for District Conference (like Stake Conference).  It was a long trip for lots of the members.  It was held in the Hotel Ramada because there are too many people to meet in the Oradea branch building.  We had 5 members and one investigator from our branch at the meeting.  And President Hettinger called on our newest member, Carmen, to bear her testimony.  She was terrified, but got through it.  She has a strong spirit and will be a great addition to our branch.

We were well taught by Elder Orton, a former Seventy, Temple President, and Mission President in Romania.  To his credit, most of his talk was given in Romanian.  It has been 10 years since they were here.

We were asked the questions "How is your faith in God?"  and   "Can you say you know the Savior was resurrected from the dead?"  and "Can you say that the church is the only true church on the earth?"  He noted that the skyline of Romania is dotted with churches and cathedrals.  This is a Christian country.  He also encouraged us to realize that all things prophesied by the prophets of God come to pass.  ALL of them.
Amazing Elder Orton

President Hettinger was a trooper.  His wife was flying to the United States because their daughter just had her first child.  A baby girl.  He greeted everyone with a handshake and spoke to as many as he could.

President Hettinger taught us what is required for a Stake in the church.  Currently, there are no wards in Romania.  A stake can be formed when there are 5 wards of 15 tithing paying Melchezidek Priesthood holders and 24 additional Melchizedek Priesthood holders.  He says we are not close, but we are not far from achieving this goal. He reminded us that we have to be humble to believe that Heavenly Father has a vision for Romania.

President Hettinger is working on Romanian, but needs President Geambasu to interpret for him for now.

The Elders and Sisters enjoy seeing each other at all the meetings we attend.  There are hugs all around.

The missionaries stayed in Oradea for interviews with the President and arrived home around 9:30 on Sunday night.  We met them at the train station because they left their apartment keys in our car.

We walked outside to the depot while we were waiting and snapped this picture of a sleeper train that was headed to Bucharest overnight.

Cu placere! Ne vedem!
